Each November, we host a giant yard sale at our home in south Florida. Weeks of planning, numerous donations from friends and members, and many hours of volunteer work generate funds for the Dolores Taylor Scholarship from our Quota International‘s Boca/Delray Chapter. The first scholarship was granted in 2009 to a long time friend who is the biological older sister of my mom’s “little sister” from the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. You can see that many threads weave through my life’s fabric.
I’ve known the scholarship student since she was in 8th grade and have watched her grow into a successful college junior at the University of Florida (my alma mater!).
In a recent correspondence, I asked her if she was on LinkedIn. Much to my surprise, she responded “No, I am not on LinkedIn. I am not sure what to do with a LinkedIn or what it is for.” Here is a good reminder to follow up on inquiries about professional networking. As mentors and professionals, we should extend invitations to college students to create a LinkedIn profile and encourage them to start building their professional networks.
I consistently recommend Hannah Morgan, the career sherpa. Today’s newsletter from Hannah highlights the changes to the look, feel and functionality of your profile.
While LinkedIn doesn’t make changes often, the new profile is different. You can review the official LinkedIn announcement of changes: Meet the New LinkedIn Profile.
I recommend that you read Hannah’s blog post about LinkedIn Features You Don’t Want to Overlook.
As with all social media, your digital presence requires proper care and feeding. LinkedIn is a platform for active participation, so jump on in!
